Viennese Night at the BBC Proms



Great set of performances
This DVD comprises excerpts from a series of live performances at the BBC Proms between 1974 and 1979. However the images are clear, the PCM stereo sound intimate, and the performances excellent. There are performances by three different orchestras and four different conductors. There are pieces by Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehar, Johann Strauss I, and Franz von Suppe. There are two pieces featuring the soprano Sheila Armstrong who has a beautiful voice. The rendition of Franz Lehar's "Gold und Silber" Walzer op 79 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Walter Susskind is amazing -- I listened to it at least 5 times. Apparently Viennese Night at the BBC Proms attracts a participatory audience -- the audience sways, bounces, and at times hums. I found this disconcerting at first, but the beauty of the music won out and I have listened and watched this DVD several times. It has a different feel compared to the New Year's concerts from Vienna or the Andre Rieu...
